The
Creswell residence was designed in late 2004 into early 2005. Construction
began in late 2005 and was completed late 2006. The modern home is designed
for today's lifestyle, with a spacious open floor plan. The home features
a generous first floor master suite and living area, it is built for single
floor living. The house was designed and constructed by Creswell &
Company. It is an example of what can be achieved via green building practices.
The house is built on a superior wall foundation and features engineered
I joists and decking, and the exterior walls are built from structural
insulated panels. It is well insulated (walls at r-27, and ceilings at
r-50+ ) and air sealed and collects passive solar warmth and light in
the winter. The home is heated and cooled by a geothermal HVAC system. The mechanical equipment is 1/2 the size necessary for a conventional new home of this size, and realizes great savings in yearly operating costs. The home contains many healthy and green choices for interior finishes, including bamboo and tile floors, low voc paint, and MDF doors and trim (to name a few features). The house is designed to be both healthy and energy efficient. Utility records from 2007 and 2008 show how it is performing. This house is all electric, apart from a few propane appliances (the instant hot water heaters, 3 fireplaces, and a gas grill). The total electric used for 2007 was 19,892kwh, and for 2008 was 19,412kwh. This total is for all appliances (including 4 full size refrigerators/freezers) all cooking, all lighting, and all heating and cooling of the space. -The avg. monthly electric bill in 2007 was $230, the 2008 average was $200. -The avg. monthly gas bill in 2007 was $125, the 2008 average was $137. -The monthly avg. for all utilities in 2007 was $355, the 2008 average was $337. The house is 4,600 sq. ft. of finished space plus a 600 sq. ft. heated garage, totaling over 5,200 square feet of conditioned high volume (9'+ ceilings) space, and all appliance usage.
